Systemic Diseases, Oral Health and Comorbidities in the HIV Positive Patients, Long Term Impact on the Dental Professional

 

HIV/AIDS has changed dramatically since its epidemic in the early 1980’s with people living longer, healthier and more productive lives. This presentation will focus on HIV/AIDS and a variety of inflammatory conditions that may potentiate systemic and oral manifestations.  The aging patient who presents with both HIV disease and concomitant/comorbidities such as diabetes, respiratory disease, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, among others is included.  Additionally discussion on recent studies and surveys examining the dental hygienists knowledge of HIV and their Attitude and Willingness to perform a Rapid HIV Test will be shared. The wrap up will briefly incorporate ongoing goals and efforts that are being made toward our becoming “An Aids Free Generation”
