The FDA process of drug approval, safety, efficacy and oversight of over the counter, prescription and in office-dispensed drugs is ongoing due to extensive research, development and technology. This constant progress places an increasing demand on the dental professional to acquire a significant understanding of specific drugs, why they are prescribed and how they are used to treat systemic diseases and conditions present within our patient population. This presentation will examine and describe specific systemic conditions, pharmacologic agents recommended for treatment, adverse drug effects and oral manifestations. Emphasis will be placed on conditions and medications dental professionals will likely encounter.
